Why Counselling?

Life can be challenging. We can be hit by the breakdown of a relationship or friendship, a bereavement, a traumatic event, a serious medical diagnosis, work-related stress, or many other upsetting life events.

Sometimes we suffer such strong feelings, and become so stuck, that we can’t see how to get life back on track. We can’t see how to make any progress, how to deal with our emotions, how to solve our problems.

Counselling can help by allowing you a safe space in which to explore your thoughts and feelings without feeling judged or rushed. It can help you discover what is going on for you, and enable you to take more control. It can help you understand and manage your emotions, and reduce your stress. It can help relieve depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. It can help enhance your self-esteem.

Through counselling we can learn to accept ourselves, and develop a stronger sense of self-love, self-compassion, and self-confidence.

About Me

My name is Nick, and I am a qualified Counsellor and Psychotherapist based in Buckinghamshire. I work remotely UK-wide, using Zoom or by phone. I live near High Wycombe and also work face to face in rooms near the station.

I have extensive experience helping people who are suffering from depression, anxiety, stress and other mental health conditions, relationship problems and bereavement. I offer a safe, confidential, non-judgmental space in which to explore and work through your thoughts and feelings. I offer short- and long-term therapy.

I have a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and am a registered member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy). I apply the BACP’s Ethical Framework to my work and have regular counselling supervision. I am DBS-checked and have appropriate professional insurance.

In addition to working in private practice, I work with clients through a national bereavement charity and a national mental health charity.

I would describe my approach as integrative. At its core it is person-centred, focussing on your experience and your needs. It then also draws on psychodynamic insights, and on cognitive behavioural approaches. It is adaptable depending on your needs and preferences. At its heart it uses talking as a way of unlocking psychological problems, helping you to understand what is happening and take control.

Next Step

Once you have contacted me, the next step is to have an initial session which gives both of us the opportunity to see how we might work together. Choosing a therapist is a very important and individual decision and you need to allow yourself time to make that choice. In the initial session I would ask you to tell me your story and what you would like help with. It also gives you an opportunity to meet me and ask me anything you would like to know about therapy and how it works.

If we decide to work together, we will then agree to meet regularly, usually weekly. Depending on what is troubling you, we might meet for just a few sessions or for a longer period of time. Sessions last 50 minutes and my fee is £60.

Bereavement and grief

Grieving is natural after the death of someone we love. It takes time, and we all grieve differently and don’t always follow a set process. When we have difficulty getting over a loss, it can become hard to get support from friends and family and those we normally confide in. Feelings of isolation, guilt and anger can persist, and can surface in ways that become overwhelming. This is where counselling can help you – it provides a safe space where you can explore your feelings and fears and can enable you to move through your grief, and help you to face life again.

I also have experience of working with clients who were bereaved in sudden or traumatic circumstances, including by suicide. When somebody dies in such difficult circumstances, our feelings can be very strong and frightening, life can lose meaning, and it can seem really hard to return to normal life. Counselling can give you the opportunity to explore those most difficult feelings in a safe, understanding environment.
